Community e-waste Events
Each year, Australians discarding
their end of life products at a rate of:
-
1.2 million televisions
-
2.1 million computers and laptops
-
700,000 computer monitors
-
12.9 million other computer components
This is predicted will grow to 44 million by 2027/28*
The substances of concern found in electronic
waste, such as personal computers include lead, mercury, beryllium,
cadmium, lithium, bromine, phosphor, antimony and barium, amongst others.
When these products are disposed as landfill,
leaching occurs, releasing toxic and hazardous substances into surrounding
aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, causing both health and
environmental problems.
For each tonne of e-waste recycled, between 3 and
5 tonnes of CO2 emissions are avoided. This consumer hazardous e-waste is a
genuine threat to the Australian environment and economy.
